Metrology Underpins the Railway Industry in Taiwan

NML has been commissioned to assist the development of Railway Technology Research and Verification Center in assuring safety, comfort, environmental protection, accuracy and convenience of railway transport. The vibration, noise, electromagnetic intensity, and comfort level of car around the rail, the ground surface, and the bridge deck were investigated according to relevant standards and regulations, such as ISO 2631, UIC 513 R, and the regulations of competent authority. Through the works, the technologies of inspection and evaluation are currently being developed with the traceable Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMCs) of NML.

Measuring technologies and devices, such as the track gauge calibration system, have been developed to meet the requirements of railway inspections and evaluations. The calibration system developed by NML has integrated precision glass scale, rotary encoder, and linear guide to provide high calibration capability for various types of rail combination rules, including track gauge, flangeway, and superelevation. Besides, by applying custom jigs, the system can be used to calibrate the rules from different manufacturers. Furthermore, the calibration results are digitally recorded and the calibration certificate can be generated straightforwardly. Overall, the effectiveness and efficiency of measurement and calibration can be substantially improved by the developed system.
